Garden Update – January 27, 2011

The plan this year is to focus more on companion planting. I’m going to space my tomato plants out so that no two plants are touching or near each other. I’m surrounding each tomato plant with onions, and planting cucumber in between each tomato plant. I’m going to swap out planting tomatoes from the east 3 beds to the west 3 beds every year so I automatically rotate my crops to prevent buildup in the soil that is harmful for the tomatoes. I managed to get home with just enough time to get all the onions in the ground. I’m only going to have enough room for 9 plants in the garden this yearThe seedlings have turned a deep green color since they’ve been under the grow lights.  I hope that is a good thing.

Your Grocery Bill Will Double in 2011

Can you afford to spend double at the grocery store? I’m hearing news like this from multiple sources. The inflation number published by the US government is not realistic of real cost increases. (can’t afford to pay social security increases, so they cook the books) If you are interested in growing just a little bit of your own food, right now is the time to get started. It doesn’t take much to get started and you might be really happy eating food from your own backyard!

Garden Update – January 24, 2011

Seeing a picture of someone else’s seedlings reminded me that I had tomato seeds planted in a box on top of the refrigerator.  Good thing I decided to look at them, because then already sprouted.  The pepper plants are doing good to, just need to move them under the supercharged growlights.

Gays For Guns

A friend of mine used this catch phrase to describe Libertarianism.  Here is an actual quote:

The libertarian party is where the republicans and democrats can come together. The republicans can forget about their conservative social policies and democrats can forget about their liberal fiscal policies. But I see error in this statement. They are both statist. The republicans are corporate statists and the democrats are just statists.

I guess it is where republicans can learn to love gays and democrats can learn to love guns.

Seed Swap

I participated in a seed swap meeting today. The miracle of the Interwebs brought together a group of about 30 people who were interested in meeting up to swap out seeds with each other. That alone was amazing to me. I picked up some pretty cool seeds, and got to hear from several other gardeners and learn how they make things grow.

The Right to Life is Self-Evident

I agree with everything Rep Lankford says in the video below, he clearly states the truth. This is one of the very few issues I disagree with Libertarians on. One of the basic and legitimate roles of government is protecting its people, especially the ones that are not able to protect themselves.

Like Chocolate Much?

Bryson adamantly told me not to take any licks or wash anything until he was ready and in place.  I think I might have got one taste in before he pushed me away and started cleaning house.
