Permaculture Emerges From the Underground
A good article about one of my very favorite subjects, permaculture was published in the New York Times: Permaculture Emerges From the Underground – NYTimes.com. The author of the article took one of Wayne Weiseman‘s PDC classes. Wayne was just in Fort Worth a few weeks ago, and I’m mad at myself for not being able to meet him in person. Anyway, here are some of my favorite quotes from the article:
permaculture is a growing and influential movement that runs deep beneath sustainable farming and urban food gardening
…
pemaculture has no membership rolls or census-takers. By intention, “it has been, for all of the years I’ve been involved, a pretty decentralized movement,” Mr. Pittman said.
…
Permaculture landscapes, which mimic the ecology of the area, are meant to be vertical, dense and self-perpetuating. Once the work of the original planting is done, Mr. Mollison jokes in one of his videos, “the designer turns into the recliner.”
…
Mr. Rabkin said, “I like to say that the telephone attracts beneficial wildlife — our Amish neighbors — which is what permaculture tells us to do.”
Hyatt of Richardson Enforces a Muslim-only Policy
My friend Mike wrote up his account from tonight:
Hyatt of Richardson Enforces a Muslim-only Policy « North Texas Tea Party.
They had been expelled from the “Dinner to Support Religious Freedom & Sharia Awareness” for being non-Muslim.
Growth, Energy, and Debt
I just read an article titled “Debt tantrum on a sinking ship by Richard Heinberg” that I want to share a few quotes from regarding our current national debt:
Republicans say that more government debt is unsustainable. If we keep piling it on, we’ll eventually get to a point where all government revenues are eaten up by interest payments. We have to get off the deficit treadmill now; if we do—if we downsize government by shrinking the federal budget—we can free private enterprise to create jobs and grow the economy.
Democrats agree that spending needs to be controlled, but argue that overly ambitious spending cuts will undermine the recovery. Government has a necessary role in priming the nation’s economic pump during a recession. At the same time, the super-rich—who benefitted so much from Bush-era tax cuts and are sitting on enormous piles of cash—should be helping the nation make ends meet.
These two perspectives are irreconcilable. Ironically, though, they’re both right. Debt will overwhelm us. Reducing government spending will cause the economy to relapse. But they’re also both wrong. Reining in government won’t automatically cause the growth of private enterprise. Yet neither will more stimulus spending.
All most of us have known is a growth economy based on debt. It is unsustainable… especially when you realize the growth is dependent on cheap energy, which is based on natural resources being used up much faster than they are being replenished. What do you think is going to happen when the forces driving the unsustainable practices finally stop?

Aquaponics 101 Video from TheUrbanFarmingGuys
I love what ‘The Urban Farming Guys‘ are doing. This excellent video is a 7 minute introduction to aquaponics.
From their ‘about‘ page:
Who are we…..
We are the urban experiment…
We are the seed that died and went into the ground. We are about 20 families who have purposefully uprooted from out of our comfortable suburban homes and moved into one of the worst neighborhoods in Kansas City. We bought homes within a 5 block radius of each other and we put down our stake for the sake of the youth and the poor. What is going to happen to us … who knows, but this is certainly not some novelty idea, and please don’t try it yourselves without thinking it through. We are a band of revolutionaries. We don’t claim this is even a good idea…. it is our lives. We are cultivating the life of the innercity. The Police helicopter is our favorite bird. Neighborhood meetings are our drama. Dropping crime stats are our touchdown cheer. Just to see people walking their dogs around the block again is a sign of good things to come. Stay tuned, lots of adventure to come….and please Join Us Here
Spoon: It’s Pretty Amazing…
“It’s pretty amazing that our society has reached a point where the effort necessary to extract oil from the groud, ship it to a refinery, turn it into plastic, shape it appropriately, truck it to a store, buy it, and bring it home is considered to be less effort than what it takes to just wash the spoon when you’re done with it.”
Who Added “Christian” and “Conservative” to Norway Shooter’s Facebook Page?
My heart goes out to the people of Norway who are pressed to deal with this terrible act of terrorism against them. I also understand why my monkeysphere brain doesn’t actually feel any real pain in this event, and that fact lets me take a step back and look at the story itself. Like the part of the story that the shooter is Christian and Conservative. It seems to get pointed out pretty clearly and early, even though it probably isn’t true. How about an explanation how his facebook profile was changed:

Neighbors Turning Against Neighbors
A recent article from Alex Jones and published on Drudge titled “DHS Video Characterizes White Americans as Most Likely Terrorists” stirred me enough that I feel I need to share parts of it.
The Department of Homeland Security seems to be hell-bent on perpetuating the
myth that mad bombers are hiding around every corner, when in reality Americans are just as likely to be killed by lightning strikes or peanut allergies.
It is very interesting and important to take note of the fact that DHS programs like the “See Something, Say Something” which encourages people to report “suspicious activity” are
in every case throughout history … a trait of oppressive, dictatorial regimes.
I won’t go into the whole racial bullshit, but if you are a white male, you should especially be interested in reading the entire article to understand more about that aspect of what is going on here also. Back to the primary theme:
from East Germany, to Communist Russia, to Nazi Germany, historically governments who encourage their own citizens to report on each other do so not for any genuine safety concerns or presumed benefits to security, but in order to create an authoritarian police state that coerces the people into policing each other’s behavior and thoughts
…Germans under Hitler denounced their neighbors and friends not because they genuinely believed them to be a security threat, but because they expected to selfishly benefit from doing so, both financially, socially and psychologically via a pavlovian need to be rewarded by their masters for their obedience
…This is the kind of society the Department of Homeland Security is… It is about as far removed as you can possibly get from the vision the founders of the nation had in mind when they created the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence.
Alex Jones comments at the end of the article:
This is about playing minorities off against whites, creating further resentment and suspicion, getting us at each other’s throats just as how different racial groups were set upon each other in Hitler’s Germany to create an environment of fear and distrust, motivating people to inform on each other for the state.
My Interview on the Growing Your Grub Podcast
Steve Howard with the “Growing Your Grub” podcast interviewed me about community gardening and the Citizen Gardener program. His podcast has been a great resource for vegetable gardening information. He had to adapt his growing techniques when he moved the the hot arid Texas climate, and often shares great tips and tricks on his show.
We discussed a little bit about how the “North Texas Vegetable Gardeners” was started, and then got to talk about the DFW Citizen Gardener program.
