A Good Test

Received via email:

If you ever wondered what side of the fence you sit on, this is a great test!

Lot of truth here!

If a conservative doesn’t like guns, he doesn’t buy one.
If a liberal doesn’t like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn’t eat meat..
If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.
If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a conservative doesn’t like a talk show host, he switches channels.
Liberals demand that those they don’t like be shut down.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn’t go to church.
A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.

Garden Update: April 6, 2010

I’m almost out of space to plant, but I still have more I want to plant.  I am trying out something new:  Planting squash at the base of a tree.  I’ll train the vine to grow into the tree.  I saw this on a permaculture video on youtube; I should be able to get double production out of the same space.  I’ll also go back and plant some pole beans and chives at the base of some more trees.  The wind was blowing pretty good today and I learned if I don’t steak down my wind blocks, they become airborne and useless for their intended purpose of blocking the wind from my tender seedlings.  I also went to the feed store and bought the raw materials to make my own ‘complete organic fertilizer’, and of course I couldn’t pass up the chance to get a few more seedlings, including a new tomato variety ‘Solar Fire Tomato‘.

Bernie Madoff vs. The Government

Some of you know this but not enough of you. Madoff did to his investors what the government has been doing to us for over 60 years with Social Security. There is no meaningful difference between the two schemes except that one was operated by a private individual who is now in jail, and the other is operated by politicians who enjoy perks, privileges and status in spite of their actions. [source]

Do you need a side-by-side comparison? Well here’s a nifty little chart.

BERNIE MADOFF SOCIAL SECURITY
Takes money from investors with the promise that the money will be invested and made available to them later Takes money from wage earners with the promise that the money will be invested in a “Trust Fund” and made available later.
Instead of investing the money Madoff spends it on nice homes in the Hamptons and yachts. Instead of depositing money in a Trust Fund the politicians use it for general spending and vote buying.
When the time comes to pay the investors back Madoff simply uses some of the new funds from newer investors to pay back the older investors. When benefits for older investors become due the politicians pay them with money taken from younger and newer wage earners to pay the geezers.
When Madoff’s scheme is discovered all hell breaks loose. New investors won’t give him any more cash. When Social Security runs out of money they simply force the taxpayers to send them some more.
Bernie Madoff is in jail. Politicians remain in Washington.

A nostalgic story from someone else’s childhood

Around age 10 my dad got me one of those little badass compound bow beginner kits. Of course, the first month I went around our land sticking arrows in anything that could get stuck by an arrow. Did you know that a 1955 40-horse Farmall tractor will take 6 rounds before it goes down? Tough sumbich.

That got boring, so being the 10 yr. old Dukes of Hazzard fan that I was, I quickly advanced to taking strips of cut up T-shirt doused in chainsaw gas tied around the end and was sending flaming arrows all over the place. Keep in mind this was 99.999% humidity swampland so there really wasn’t any fire danger. I’ll put it this way- a set of post hole diggers and a 3ft. hole and you had yourself a well.

One summer afternoon, I was shooting flaming arrows into a large rotten oak stump in our backyard. I looked over under the carport and see a shiny brand new can of starting fluid (ether). The light bulb went off. I grabbed the can and set it on the stump. I thought that it would probably just spray out in a disappointing manner… lets face it to a 10 yr. old mouthbreather like myself ether really doesn’t “sound” flammable. So, I went back into the house and got a 1 pound can of pyrodex (black powder for muzzle loader rifles).

Easter Egg Hunt

All the family were over to watch Bryson hunt eggs.  I don’t know what this boy would do if he didn’t receive so much attention!

Amber booked the Pump’it’Up Jr in Plano for Bryson’s birthday party.  I’m pretty sure we all had a great time!  Here are the pictures:

Garden Update: April 4, 2010

I spent most of the weekend getting my planting done. It was hard to decide what to plant where and how much of everything I needed. I’m not even done yet, but I have a good bit done. I did build a bunch of 12″ cubes out of wire fence to use as protective covers. My weak little seedlings couldn’t handle the wind. I guess I should have been working on hardening them off all this week, but I never got home early enough to do that. I wrapped plastic around the cube walls to serve as a wind break; I think that will keep them alive while they get used to the outdoors this week. See the descriptions of each picture of more details.

My First Asparagus

I noticed a lone “stick” this morning when I left for work.  It is my first asparagus shoot and it is about 10 inches tall already.

Bryson’s Motorcycle

Gran and Grandad bought Bryson a tricycle “motorcycle” for his birthday.  He was VERY impressed with all the flashing lights, sounds, knobs, buttons and controls on it!
