Garden Update: April 6, 2010

I’m almost out of space to plant, but I still have more I want to plant.  I am trying out something new:  Planting squash at the base of a tree.  I’ll train the vine to grow into the tree.  I saw this on a permaculture video on youtube; I should be able to get double production out of the same space.  I’ll also go back and plant some pole beans and chives at the base of some more trees.  The wind was blowing pretty good today and I learned if I don’t steak down my wind blocks, they become airborne and useless for their intended purpose of blocking the wind from my tender seedlings.  I also went to the feed store and bought the raw materials to make my own ‘complete organic fertilizer’, and of course I couldn’t pass up the chance to get a few more seedlings, including a new tomato variety ‘Solar Fire Tomato‘.
