Garden Update: May 15, 2010

I took advantage of a coupon I had for North Haven Gardens.  I paid $10 for $30 of stuff.  Pretty good deal!  They have a great selection of vegetables and herbs, and their plant prices are actually not too bad.  (most everything in that store is about 25% to 50% overpriced)  Good thing I was in a hurry, because I made it out of the store with only one box of plants.  I tried to get some popular varieties of herbs that I’ve never tried before.  I taste-tasted most of them as I was planting, of course.

Email is Working Now

This website now has the capability of sending you email. When you leave a comment, there is a checkbox option to “Notify me of followup comments via e-mail”, and it will do just that if you click on it. I’m trying out a theme that is a little more exciting than the one I’ve had before. I seem to place much more importance on ‘function’ than ‘form’, but I do realize it could look better than it does.

Anyway, give the new option a try. -Brian

California 160 years ago…

Do you know what happened 160 years ago this fall back in 1850?

California became a state.
The people had no electricity.
The state had no money.
Almost everyone spoke Spanish.
There were gunfights in the streets.
So basically nothing has changed except the women had real tits and the men didn’t hold hands.

Gardening: May 9, 2010

I spent a few hours outside today.  I planted about 4 squares of carrots and some marigolds in the big garden, then I removed all my sugar snap peas out of the bed near the back door.  Earlier this season, I put a sharp edge on my hoe and that makes it easy to clear out a bed quickly.  I planted some radish, lavender, basil, thyme, and some flowers.

Comet the Hunter

Comet really impressed me with his hunting skills today.  I let both the dogs in the garden area while I was there and could keep an eye on them.  Before I knew it Comet had something in his mouth and was running away.  It was a tiny mouse.  Later in the day, he darted past me as soon as I opened the gate, ran straight for something, then ran back out.  Than I heard the little squeaking sound and knew he got another one.  Now I know what has been eating up my pepper seedlings.  I wonder how they will like their last meal?  (peanut butter served on a little lever that triggers a spring-loaded skull-crusher)

Garden Update: May 7, 2010

Lots of lush green growth right now but a few plants are stumbling.  I put a few more plants in the ground, planted some more beans, and cut out some of the lettuce, it getting too hot for it already and it is bolting and turning bitter.

Paintball Game, May 1 2010

We had 12 folks come out and play paintball in the woods yesterday.  The weather was perfect, and we had lots of fun as usual.  I was dead tired by the time I got home.

Garden Problem: Tire Potatoes

Lesson learned.  I thought it was a good idea to add hay to my tires instead of dirt.  It would be easier to harvest with less mess. The problem is that it turned into an active compost pile.  Before I realized what was happening, the poor plants bent over in pain.  When I removed the hay, some of the pieces were too hot to hold in my hand, and most of the plants simply broke off when I touched them.

A Norman Rockwell moment

1- You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
2- What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

3- The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

4- When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

5- You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.

Little-Known Concepts?

I ran across these ‘core values’ in this article and thought maybe there are some folks who might not be very familiar with these very important concepts.  These were also core values held by the people who brought you the best country on Earth, and are shared by the tea party folks:

  1. Rights are not “granted” to us by the government — they are ours by our very nature, by our birthright.
  2. ALL just political authority is derived from the people — and government exists solely with our consent!
  3. We the people of the several states created the federal government — not the other way around!
  4. The Tenth Amendment defines the total scope of federal power as being that which has been delegated by the people to the federal government in the Constitution — and nothing more.
  5. The People of each State have the sole and exclusive right and power to govern themselves in all areas not delegated to their government.
  6. A Government without limits is a tyranny!
  7. When Congress enacts laws and regulations that are not made in Pursuance of the powers enumerated in the Constitution, the People are not bound to obey them.
