Life of Bryson: June 2010

Amber and Bryson have been doing all kinds of fun things lately. Swim lessons, tumble class, birthday parties, playdates at the park, you name it, they are out doing it!

Face Off

Bryson wasn’t too sure about the turtle that was in the side yard.

Don’t Use Hotels.com

I recommend against using hotels.com, or any of the other third-party hotel-booking companies. Here is why:
1) You aren’t able to cancel or change your reservation without hassle and/or fee/penalities.
2) You can’t get credit on your normal rewards points accounts.
3) You pre-pay as soon as you place the order online. There is less incentive to make something right after they already have all your money!
The hotel clerk said they will gladly match whatever price you find online, just give them a call directly instead of paying the third-party.

That is exactly what I’ll do, next time that is.

I just learned that hotels.com, hotwire.com, tripadvisor.com, and classicvacations.com are all owned expedia.com.
(hotels.com has not answered my email asking a simple question, and it has been 2 days now)

DIVORCE AGREEMENT

received via email:

Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives, socialists, Marxists and Obama supporters, et al:

We have stuck together since the late 1950’s for the sake of the kids, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce…. I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has clearly run its course.

Our two ideological sides of America cannot and will not ever agree on what is right for us all, so let’s just end it on friendly terms. We can smile and chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and go our own way.

Here is a model separation agreement:

Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by landmass each taking a similar portion. That will be the difficult part, but I am sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that, it should be relatively
easy! Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate tastes.

We don’t like redistributive taxes so you can keep them. You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU. Since you hate guns and war, we’ll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA and the military. We’ll take the nasty, smelly oil industry and you can go with wind, solar and biodiesel.

You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore and Rosie O’Donnell (You are, however, responsible for finding a bio-diesel vehicle big enough to move all three of them).

Local, It’s What’s For Dinner

Amber suggested that a picture of the cooked food was much more appropriate blog fodder than just the raw food. After lots of cutting and cleaning, here is what she fed the family with tonight. Fried Okra (Glenda Style), sautéd veges (squash, zucchini, onion, eggplant, and red pepper), sliced tomato, sliced cucumber, and oven roasted potatoes. Everything is local, either from our backyard or from local farmers, with the exception of the red pepper, which came from Canada.

More CSA Food

I went by and picked up another distribution of food from our CSA after work today. Looks like lots of good food, and we haven’t even got to the good stuff yet. Armenian cucumber (which is actually a melon), okra (which is frying up right now), eggplant, squash, zucchini, onion, (which are cut up ready to sauté together), cucumber, garlic, blueberries, dill, sage, and some jalapeños. I think I like the CSA plan!

Dinner From the Yard

When it was time for me to cook dinner tonight, I instinctively walked into the pantry and thought to myself, “what can I make that is quick and easy”. Staring at all the packaged and processed foods, I gave myself a thump to the head and walked out to the garden. I pulled up some radish, carrot, potato, onion, and garlic, corn, and some beans. Then I grabbed some chive and lemon basil. It took a while for me to get everything washed, and it took forever to shell just a small amount of beans. It would be hard to feed yourself from your own garden, but I can see how it could possibly be done. It is much more work than normal, It would be very hard to work all day then prepare a bunch of food from your own garden each day. I need to get better about planting more things in stages so that I have a steady supply of fresh food, rather than all of one type of plant getting ripe at the same time. Continuous work!

OH, and I think I need a bean sheller machine.

New Bird Nest

Amber came across this bird as she was pruning the trumpet vine on the gazebo. She has a nest built in one of the hanging flower baskets. The bird let her get very close before finally flying off. Looks like we are going to have a few babies soon. I don’t think they are going to fare very well with two dogs roaming the backyard. Nature can be cruel.
