We are just one disaster away from martial law

When I talk to people about the need for Oath Keepers and tell them about US law enforcement agents going door to door collecting guns from citizens in New Orleans, they either aren’t aware of that fact, don’t believe me, or don’t understand why that is a big deal.

There is no reason for martial law in the USA, ever.  Guns should not be taken from citizens who aren’t criminals.  Ever.  US citizens who are not breaking the law should not be detained.  All of these things should scare us.  No American should tolerate these acts.  The fact that the actually already happened should send alarms off in the minds of those who understand why our Constitution is so important and significant.

Never one to say no to PBJ

This takes a few minutes to get through, but well worth the read!

Is your time worth $72 per hour?

I did the math behind making your own jam and now I think making your own jam is one of the best uses of your time possible.  It is easy too!  As an added bonus, you know exactly what ingredients are going into that jar:  there are only 4 ingredients.  I wrote more about it on the North Texas Vegetable Gardeners post “The Economics of Making Your Own”.

My ‘project’ is well underway now!

Today was a very big day for me.  The first class of the DFW Citizen Gardener program occurred today, and it was a great success.  We had 29 students go through, and I could tell there were many ‘ah-ha’ moments for people.  I think many were inspired to go home and start growing some of their own food.

I decided this spring to do some useful action to help solve some of the problems I complain about all the time.  I am bringing the Citizen Gardener program started in Austin to the DFW metroplex.  The program is designed to give every-day people who don’t have much time or money the knowledge, skills, and encouragement to grow some of their own food.  It also aims to build communities, help others, and be sustainable.   Many of the students from today will go on to volunteer and teach future classes.  I’ll schedule classes in the local planting season, and hope to have many available in the spring time.  If anyone is interested in learning more about the program, please visit the main Citizen Gardener DFW page, the Citizen Gardener board on the North Texas Vegetable Gardeners forum, or contact me directly!

3 Things to Know Before Shopping at ALDI

I stopped by the ALDI grocery store in Plano today to take advantage of their 99cent/lb strawberry deal and learned a few things the hard way that everyone needs to know before attempting to shop there.

  1. You have to start with a quarter.  A real quarter, in your pocket.  I thought I was doing a guy a big favor by meeting a him in the parking lot to take his cart from him.  He gave me a strange look and said, “do you have a quarter?”  It was then that I figured out what the strange locking mechanism on the handle was…. You have to place a quarter in the lock to get a cart, then you get your quarter back when you return your cart.  Freeking genius, but I sure looked like an idiot.
  2. They don’t take credit cards!
  3. They don’t have bags, sacks, or anyone to bag your groceries!  They do have a counter-top for you to bag your own damn groceries though!  (provided you brought your own damn bags!)

If you find yourself bitching about how bad things are in the USA, just drop by your local ALDI store to get a taste of what the rest of the world is like!

This is MY America

Jason w/ “The Urban Farming Guys” was interviewed by Jack Spirco yesterday. I love what these families are doing. They realize the government is not the answer to all their problems, and they are making a huge difference for the good. They stand for low-cost solutions, open source knowledge, caring for others, teamwork, and smart solutions. This is my America!

Federal Debt, The Way I See It

If the US Government were a family & their household income was $55,000 per year, they’d actually be spending $96,500 — $41,500 more than they made! That means they’re spending 175% of their annual income! So, in 2011 they’d add $41,500 of debt to their current credit card debt of $366,000! – Dave Ramsey

The federal government now has a deficit of over $14,500,000,000,000. Many people are saying we have to solve the problem by ‘generating revenue’ through increased taxes. Take a look at how much EVERYONE in the US makes:

Go ahead and add up all those bars, and lets say we tax 100% of the income from 100% of the people. That is still not enough to fix the problem!

This is a spending problem!

Raising taxes might help a little, but you can’t solve this problem by taxing people.  Taxing people is not ‘generating revenue’, it is taking wealth from a productive person and doing something else with it.  The problem is we are spending too much money.  Simple right?

Now for the real problem(s):

  1. Very few government officials are interested in dealing with the real problem.  (should be obvious now that you’ve seen the argument and RESULT of the recent debit ceiling debate)
  2. Even if they were interested in dealing with the problems, they don’t have the backbone or the brains to resolve the problem.
  3. Most US citizens think cutting government costs are a good idea, until they get to the cuts that affect them; so as a whole, every government program is ‘off the table’.

So here we are, the problem is simple to define but hard to solve!

Mike w/ the NTTP has more information in his recent post Downgrade Causes and Fallout, and many interesting graphs posted on his facebook page.

He Saw It Coming…

Ron Paul predicted what is about to happen to our economy. The other candidates laughed and sneered. They promised everything was fine…

No one can match Ron Paul’s knowledge, consistency, or honesty. He stands up for the Constitution even when it is unpopular.
