Groundwater and Subsidence

About 22% of the fresh water on earth is stored below the surface – groundwater. It is pretty easy to pump water out, but it takes a long time to refresh the water in many cases. Also, we compound the problem of recharge because we replace natural insoak areas with impermeable structures like roads and roofs. If that weren’t bad enough, we take the water displaced by these structures and divert it across the land as quick as possible (again preventing insoak) through raised home lots, drainage ditches, and storm drains. If I live to be 70 years old, I predict I’ll die of a young person murdering me out of sheer hate of the stupid things we did to make their life hell.

Now I learned about Subsidence. This is the sinking of land as the result of pumping out too much of the groundwater. It turns out the water is available because of the space between rock particles. Well, in many situations, after you remove the water, there is just empty space left, so the rock compresses, the land shrinks– forever. You will never have water in that place where the water was at—ever. In the Houston area, the land surface has gone down 9 feet. In the San Joaquin Valley it is something like 30 feet. I wonder what the punishment for robbing future generations of clean water should be? Murder seems fair to me.

Garden Update – February 21, 2012

I forgot that I had pepper seeds growing on top of the refrigerator! I happened to remember tonight and uncovered them just in time. Now I have to get my growlights hooked back up and working.

Penn Explains Libertarianism in 30 seconds

“The more freedom we can get, the better… I want to start every question with ‘is there any way we can solve this problem with more freedom instead of less'”
He does a pretty good job of simply explaining it, but Pot-head Maher doesn’t want to here the part about taxing people being a force with violence involved.

A few pictures of Aiden at six months old

Amber took a few pictures of Aiden this weekend. He is usually smiling and giggling! Lots of fun to be around when he is like that.

Aiden is becoming mobile

Here is a short video of Aiden manhandling one of his big toys. He is moving around all over the place now, just wondering how much longer until he learns to crawl.

Field Medical Training

Something I’ve been looking for was some sort of mini-EMT class to give me some basic first aid training.  My search didn’t lead to anything except CPR classes and classes geared for people who were entering the emergency care profession.  Sometime last year, I received an email about a local class that sounded exactly like what I wanted:

The course outline for the basic course is as follows:
Anatomy and physiology
Patient assessment
Wounds and trauma
Orthopedic injuries
Environmental injuries
OB/GYN
Patient transportation
Kits, equipment and further resources
Patient Simulations

The instructor is still working on getting a webpage going, but if you would like to know more, drop me a note.  Here are a few pics of the group in action:

The Purpose of the US Government

If there is one thing I wish everyone understood it is this:
The purpose of the US Government as defined by the US Constitution is to protect the individual rights of its citizens. The rights of humans do not come from any government or from any document. Your rights as a human come from the simple fact that you exist as a human. The US Constitution (or the Bill or Rights) does not grant human rights, which are unlimited, those documents were created to preserved the human rights by limiting government’s ability to interfere or oppress people’s rights.
This article says it well:

About the Clint Eastwood Chrysler Commercial

Did everyone watch the Clint Eastwood /Chrysler commercial?

It is a heartfelt speech about how Detroit is making a comeback, and how great America is, using Chrysler as an example. (American Exceptionalism)

“It’s Halftime in America” – Official Chrysler Commercial from 2012 NFL Championship Game

Didn’t Chrysler beg the government for a massive, illegal, bailout, then declare bankruptcy, then illegally bypass contracts and obligations of lenders to give ownership to unions?

Isn’t Chrysler owned by an Italian company now? (Fiat)

IS THIS REALLY THE EXAMPLE OF A GREAT AMERICAN STORY OR AN AMERICAN COMEBACK?

The ‘second half’ of American history will be one of massive failure, followed by massive intervention of massive government force using illegal means and borrowed ‘money’ to pick winners and losers? Well, I guess SOME lucky people still have a job, right? (what is the real cost of printing all that money, circumventing all those contracts, stealing from some to reward others?)

I’m asking. I don’t live in Detroit. I hear is kinda sucks as far as cities go. After 50 years of socialist policy, corrupt political dealings, crony capitalism, and strong labor unions have all but destroyed what once might have been a great ‘model city’.

This LONG article is excellent… and uses Detroit as an example in part of it. It defines and address the most pressing problems we have as a nation. I highly recommend every American read it. (bias alert –this guy is in the business of selling financial advice)

I wanna hear what you think! Feel free to set me straight on these things!
