Explaining the Donut Toy to your Buddies

I was going through some old email and stopped on this one, which I thought was hilliarous at the time, and is still funny today.

Bryan was updating the group on his son’s new developments:

From: Fowler, David

Yeah, but is he still blowing the donut pole instead of fingering the donuts?

From: Ray, Michael

What the heck does that mean?

From: Fowler, David

Ask Bryan. He’ll tell you in graphic detail.

Yes. Please do tell.

There is a toy…a central mast with stacked toroidal rings around it of various colors decreasing in diameter as you go up….forming sort of a donut pyramid. This toy has been around since we were babies. Hayden thus far has shown little to no interest in stacking them. Instead he removes each ring one at a time, pausing for chewing time on each one. At the end, when only the mast is left, he puts the first couple of inches into his mouth and all I can say is that it doesn’t look good. I’ve noted, with some dismay, that he spends more time with the mast than with any of the rings.

Entry for January 19, 2007 – Bite me, you traitor!

It was a hard day at the office today, my last day at G&T Conveyor Company. I tried to keep a good attitude and tie up the loose ends. Near the end of the day, I sent out the following email to all my co-workers:

I wanted to take a moment to let everyone know that I am leaving my position at G&T. I will be starting a new position at Dean Oliver next week. I appreciate having had the opportunity to work with each of you. Even though I will miss everyone and the company, I am looking forward to this new challenge and to starting a new phase of my career.

My grandmother bought these for Amber! I have been amazed (and confused) by all the “baby stuff” that is available. Three sizes of car seats? Off-road strollers? Shopping cart blankets? 500 styles of bottles? Where does the madness end?

I have some news too. We scheduled a date to have Amber’s c-section. So I guess if everything goes as planned, I already know his birth date!

Entry for January 05, 2007 – Career Change

Ok, I am finally getting out of the baggage business. I am going to work for Dean Oliver in a few weeks. They are an engineering firm based out of Atlanta with an office here also. I am very excited about this change, as I will be learning new aspects of engineering and sectors of industry. It will also let me spend more time at home, which will be a very good thing. I will be one of two electrical/controls engineers in the Dallas office.

IRONY: A while back, my friend Bryan was interested in a job where I work now, but my company wasn’t interested in letting him interview because he didn’t have experience in this specific industry. He wound up getting a job down in Waxahachie, and used Dean Oliver for some of their engineering subcontracting work. Well, one thing led to another, and I wind up changing careers because of him. Too funny!

What Did Jesus Really Say?

One of the books I received for Christmas this year was “The Five Gospels“. A group of scholars (“scholars” ?) spent 6 years going over old texts and evidence to answer the question “What did Jesus really say?”.

The group (called the Jesus Seminar) re-translated the Gospels (and added Thomas) in a new version which they named the Scholars Version (SV). Reading about the process they took to do this was fascinating in itself. They attempted to preserve the nuances and meanings of the original texts in modern English, without softening the words.

Their end result is a color code system that represents how the group voted on each saying. (red= he said it, pink= he likely said it, gray= similar to something he might have said, black= not likely his words) It is very interesting to read the different passages, then read the commentary that explains why the group decided what they did. They used various techniques to decide which words were common folklore, which were added by its authors, and which words were likely spoken by the historical Jesus himself. (seems to be a very challenging task, since the earliest written accounts of the time when Jesus lived are some 50 years after his death)

Anyway, it looks like this book is surrounded in controversy. I have just started into it and I have found it very interesting so far.

YELP.com – great website for reviews

I am always on a quest to tell people about places I shop that have great customer service, prices, or products. I also would like to prevent places were I get bad service at from inflicting pain on others. My philosophy is that the good places should rise to the top and the bad ones should find something else to do.
Yelp.com is a website that lets real people review all kinds of stores, from restaurants to automotive repair, and lets you search by location (adjustable radius) and category. It’s a great tool to use, go check it out and see what you think.

Entry for December 25, 2006 – Shiner 97

My brother-in-law is on the short list for favorite person of all time. Look what he got me for Christmas! (he even threw in a set of heavy glass mugs)

My friend Bryan told me this years limited edition from Shiner was a good one. The name comes from the fact that this is the 97th year the brewery has been in operation. The “97” brew is rich, thick, and has a chocolate taste to it. It is great, and I recomend buying it if you can find it.
