Entry for March 14, 2007 – Doctor Visit Turned into Hospital Stay!

We went in for Amber’s doctors appointment at 3:15 this afternoon. The doctor asked several questions, then broke the news to us. “Today was your last day at work, you are to stay home from now on because your blood pressure is high.” Of course if you know Amber, you know what this news did to her blood pressure! “I’m not ready, I have this and that and ……”

They drew some blood for some tests, and one of the results was on the high side, so we visited with the doctor again, this time the news was even better. She said, “I want you to walk over to labor and delivery right now, we need to keep you here for observation. We are going to re-do this blood work again in 6 hours. At that time, depending on the results, you can either go home, or you are having your baby now.”

HUH? WHAT?

So we get checked in to the hospital, go through all the paperwork, questions, more specimens, hooking up of monitor equipment, this is all happening pretty fast. We watch TV. The nurse comes in every hour or so and re-adjusts the monitor sensors. There was an “ER” marathon on TV, we watched them all. By the time 11 o’clock rolls around, the lady had come and pulled some more blood. Now it was time to wait on the results, then wait on the doctor’s decision. At midnight, the nurse told us everything looked good, we could go!

Whew! That was fun.

(By The Way) Do you notice Amber’s blured hand in the picture? Have you seen her talk on the phone? :)

Entry for February 25, 2007 – The Phone Guy

I am at work (new employer, who just moved into a new office with a new phone system) and overhear conversations about problems with the new phone system. I ask a few questions and learn that the new system is using VoIP phones, connected to an Ethernet switch that supplies power as well as data, all controlled from a plain-looking PC that is running Linux and Asterisk. I do a little reading and find out that this is all Open-Source software and start to get interested. No one in the office was comfortable with Linux, and when they found out the software was “just downloaded off the Internet”, they assumed it was sub-standard software. I found myself trying to explain the truth of open-source to the guys, and sat in on a close-out meeting; Before I knew it, I was designated “the phone guy”.

So now I inherented the punch-list, problems, and responsibility of provisioning new phones, equipment, etc. I saw it as an opportunity to learn more about this technology. I was amazed at the flexibility and available features, and the variety of standards-based low-cost equipment. Since it is kind of hard to fool around with the phone system in use, I decided to set something up at home. I installed trixbox on an old spare computer, signed up for a free VoIP service, signed up for a free incoming PTSN phone number, and installed a free softphone. I even spent some money on an analog adapter and a SIP desk phone.

So next time you call my house, don’t be surprised if you hear music instead of ringing, prompts for voicemail, etc. I might even require the caller to record an announcement to help me screen calls, but don’t worry, you won’t have to “press 1 for English”!

Entry for February 19, 2007 – Does watching NASCAR make you a redneck?

I watched the Daytona 500 this weekend with neighborhood friends. Although I have never been a big race fan, I loved the excitement of this race, and was explaining this to the guys at work this morning. Well, I am now labeled “redneck”. What’s up with that?

UPDATE:
As expected, my cube neighbor has been busy with photo shop. I think I look pretty famous, what do you think?
