Entry for January 27, 2008 – Closer to a Roof

Amber provided the recent news and pictures of Bryson on her blog here, here and here, so I won’t repeat her efforts. I’ll give some exciting updates on my weekend projects!

My favorite brother came over to help us get closer to being able to use the shed.

We installed the remaining fascia board, drip edge and put up all the tar paper we had.

This is proof that my fat ass is able to get up on a roof and hammer.

Entry for January 20, 2008 – Construction work in the cold

It was cold to me at least… some people from other parts of the world would argue.

Brandon and I made more progress on the (now long-term) shed project. We built the gable extensions, put up half the fascia (didn’t have enough wood to do the other side) and put half of the roof decking up. It was nice to make some good progress, but it was very cold working up high in the wind, and I really don’t much care for working on a roof in the first place. We are getting close to completion though.

The nice roof framing:

Paintball splatters from the “practice session” in the backyard a few weekends ago.

Bryson came out to see what all the noise was about.

Amber decided to get artistic with the camera.

I don’t know why my hat is crooked.

Entry for January 18, 2008 – Bryson Update

Bryson is getting around pretty good on two legs. He likes to travel to places far away, undiscovered by anyone else…. Luckily, he can’t reach doorknobs yet.

He does like the wood blocks. I think it is a combination of
1- nice tool to use to beat against the furniture (makes lots of noise)
2- loves the natural wood taste
3- good to leave behind for dad to step on

Doors are great because they open up and hide treasures inside. The treasure must be counted and logged, which is best done by spreading out the contents on the floor.

The phone is a new favorite toy. It makes noise when buttons are pressed, and sometimes familiar voices can be recognized on the speaker phone.

Comet is pretty fun to pounce on. He must like it because he always shows up in this same place, ready for another go-round.

Entry for January 13, 2008 – Paintball weekend

About a dozen people turned out to play paintball Saturday. I didn’t do too well because the cheap paint I used busted about every 10th ball I shot. We camped out this time and shot guns and had a big camp fire.

This is how a MAN starts a fire!

Jonathan shamed me by shooting me in the ass.

This was the closest Dave came to being still the whole time

Gary is so good, he only uses one knee.

I’ve never seen a better fire manager than Ron

If I let you hold it, you have to promise not to shoot me with it!

Robert can shoot better with a 2″ revolver than I can with a rifle.

I think Allen is smiling because he just stole someone’s chair.

Curtis and Ron went into stealth stalker mode… they were one with the land.

Chris is plotting his tactics.

Notice the blue goo at the front of my barrel? That was from shooting paint foam instead of paint balls.

Between games…

Entry for January 08, 2008 – Death of my favorite phone

After I plugged in a cheap headset to my phone, the microphone stopped working… When I plugged the original headset in, it worked… so I figured the headset jack was messed up and I might be able to fix it. Getting this phone apart was a chore, but of course someone had already figured it out and posted the how-to on the Internet. I screwed up and pryed in the wrong place and knocked one of the tiny surface-mount resistors loose. I touched it with a solder iron, and then tested the security of my handy work with a little screwdriver, and the whole component scraped off. I fought with it for a while, then gave up after my wife convinced me this was a hopeless battle. (the smallest glob of solder I could get on my iron was bigger than the whole resistor)

Very depressing, this phone had it all. Bluetooth, IR, Windows (outlook, active sync, media player), charged and synced through a standard USB port, memory card, external antenna connection, long battery life, tiny size, big screen… It was a PDA, MP3 player, and phone all in one, 3 years before anyone heard of the iPhone!

I don’t know what I’m going to do now.

In the picture below, the rogue resistor is sitting on the dot of the first “i” on the mini SD card at the bottom of the picture.

Entry for January 08, 2008 – Vote Smart

I was a little happy this morning to hear that Hillary was doing poorly in the polls…. just based on the fact that “I don’t like that woman”. I’m not sure exactly why. Was it because I heard she took all the silverware from the white house when she left? Was it because she was supposed to be the savior of health-care when Bill took office and then didn’t make an improvement? Not sure.

So, my point is this. One of the most important DUTIES we have as US citizens is to vote, and to use our noggins when we vote, not just vote based on all the hyped-up BS that is surrounding us. (news on TV = entertainment, not truth)

http://www.vote-smart.org/index.htm
I attended a program by vote-smart in college. They exist to provide unbiased information on our elected officials. Their web site used to be (10 years ago) simple and had little charts for the candidates so you could quickly tell where they stood on issues. Things have changed, now things are more complicated and most all of the candidates have refused to complete their questionnaire , so no more simple charts.

Dang, too much text… I hate that… OK, my point is:

Please research what is going on with “the system” and make a good choice for “what is best” and vote your choice!

(I just hope you don’t have to use one of those electronic voting machines that can be changed without any record…. argh)

If you know of any good resources for this type of information, please let me know.
