The Nanny Saga

Our nanny quit today. She didn’t show up for work and won’t return calls. Nice huh?

The pre-amble to the saga began a few weeks ago. She started showing up late. Sunday night, she called after 9pm to inform us that she was sick and couldn’t work the next day. Amber was not happy because she had no way to get into school to prepare anything for a sub the next day. So this morning she was a no-show, even though Amber had tried to call her several times yesterday.

Amber is taking it pretty badly, she placed a great deal of trust in this woman and is now doubting many of her previous thoughts.

I found a day-care that could take him on short notice and without a long-term contract. I’m not real impressed with the place, but we just need to make it through the next few weeks until Amber is out of school! Grans is going to keep him tomorrow. It is great to have family!

Seven Words on How to Invest Well

New York Times personal finance columnist Ron Lieber offers a seven-word guide to choosing how you invest your money. Lieber writes:

The author Michael Pollan offered an elegant seven-word mantra in his best-selling book “In Defense of Food” that provides clarity amid the bounty of choices on supermarket shelves: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” Boiling down investing is a similar exercise:

Index (mostly).

Save a ton.

Reallocate infrequently.

Bicycle Trailer

My latest bright idea is that we need a child carrier trailer for our bicycles. The idea is to give me another reason to get out and get some exercise. I found what I thought to be a good deal on craigslist this morning, and I drove over to Carrollton to get the thing.

Cirtterman Visits our Park

We had “critterman” come out to our HOA party on Saturday. He brought a king snake, prarie dog, an armadillo, a well-fed opossum, a barn owl, and an alligator to show everyone and even let people touch some of them.

Shaun and the Rocket

When I called my mother yesterday afternoon, she let me know that she was on her way to go pick up Shaun from school, and that they were heading over to my house so I could help Shaun finish his rocket that was needed the next morning for a scouting rocket launch event.

Interesting, I had just ate lunch with my brother, and even though we talked about many different things, the subject of rocket launches, or needing me to to help tonight never “came up”. I searched for further understanding as my mom explained that Brandon and Shaun had worked on it over the past 2 weeks, it was just that Brandon was very busy and fell asleep the day before. (I’m not making this up, I promise!)

When I called Brandon on the way home to get his story, Continue reading

“Bad Fuel Day”

The word for May 16 is bad fuel day

The mood or feeling one experiences after having just filled his or her vehicle with $4.00+ per gallon gasoline. (Usually consists of a sense of great economic despair, impending doom, anger, frustration, depression and/or a combination of all the above)

“Leave me alone. I’m having a bad fuel day!”
