New DeWalt AR – Just in Time for Father’s Day!

My new Nail Gun, made by DeWalt.

It can drive a 6-D nail thru a 2 X 4 at 200 yards.

This makes construction a real breeze…you can sit in your lawn chair and build a fence.
Just get the wife and kids to hold the fence boards in place while you sit back, relax with a cold beer, when they have the board in the right place just fire away.
With the hundred round magazine, you can build a fence with a minimum of reloading.
After a day of fence building with the new DeWalt Rapid fire nail gun, the wife will not ask you fix or build anything else. Available for a little more is the ‘band-aid magazine’ for those near misses when fence building.

North Texas Model Investment Club

Some of the same people I met a few weekends ago are also involved in the North Texas Model Investment Club. This group was formed to provide a place for newcomers to come in and see how investment club meetings work. I attended one of their monthly meetings as a guest this morning. I was impressed with the knowledge of several of the members. It is obvious they have a good understanding of stocks and financial data, and I feel like I could learn a lot from these people.

An interesting point was made, and that is that members are required to participate by periodically doing some homework and then presenting to group during a meeting. The group decides what stocks to buy and sell during these meetings. The group participation creates the distinction between an “investment club” and a “mutual fund”.

I’ve decided being involved in something like this is a great way to

  • become more educated about stock investing
  • gain the ability to understand company financial statements
  • have incentive to spend time and energy in the area of investing

I’m looking into joining the NAIC, seems like just the magazine alone is pretty valuable. If anyone else is interested in going to the next meeting, let me know.

Now I’m Sick!

When I got up this morning to get ready for work, I was feeling worse than yesterday. I decided I had better go see a doctor instead of going to work. Turns out I have a sinus and ear infection. Great news. I spent most of the day sleeping. When I was awake, I spent most of the time whining to Amber about how miserable I was. I guess I caught the same cold that Bryson is just now getting over.

In more cheerful news:
Amber broke out a bubble machine toy and set it up outside for Bryson. I can’t believe how many bubbles this thing generates.

Paintball

After staying out late Friday night, I arose early Saturday to go play paintball. The cloud cover kept the sun and heat down a bit, but it was still HOT.

I can’t remember how many times I got killed, but I do remember getting to shoot Mouth/Dave/Stick-boy 2 different times, both when he had no idea I was there, so I’m pretty happy.

NASCAR Trucks

I felt pretty lucky when my neighbor Ron invited me out to Texas Motor Speedway to watch the Craftsman Trucks race in the Sam’s Town 400. We got there early to see the IRL cars qualify. (I got to see Danika run a few laps)

The Protein War

After hearing about the book “The China Study” I decided it was worth $10 to find out what it said. It showed up in the mailbox yesterday, and as I started reading it, I was impressed and absorbed. The material is fascinating. The author makes some very tall claims (can prevent and REVERSE heart disease by diet alone) and then proceeds to back up his claims by massive research that he has done over the past 40 years. Check out the Wikipedia page for a short overview.

This morning, I started reading about a guy who strongly disputes the findings, and belongs to an organization that is on the other end of the game.

Americans spend more than anyone else per capita on healthcare, and we don’t seem to enjoy a higher quality of health… my hopes is that at least some of the answers does lie in our diets, and hope I find answers along this path.

You Could Have Heard a Pin Drop

I did a web search to find out if Colin Powell actually did say what is quoted below. He did according to snopes. Interesting information there, including the full transcript.

YOU COULD HEAR A PIN DROP

When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire building’ by George Bush.

He answered by saying, ‘Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return.

You could have heard a pin drop.
