6 Unpleasant Truths About Personal Finance
6 Unpleasant Truths About Personal Finance
Ready for some tough love about how to improve your financial situation? Jeffrey Strain, the man behind SavingAdvice.com, has put together a list of six “awful truths” about personal finance for TheStreet.com. The reason they’re “awful,” he writes, is that “these truths mean that the each person must take more responsibility and make hard decisions that they would rather leave to others.”
1. You can’t have everything you want.
2. Financial institutions are not your friends.
3. Nobody is going to teach you personal finance.
4. You are your own worst enemy.
5. You need to stop watching TV.
6. Personal finance is easy.
What? Personal finance is easy? Yep:
You already know what you need to be successful in personal finances. All you need to do to get your personal finances in order is spend less than you make. It’s a concept that even a child can comprehend. Unfortunately, knowing and implementing it are two separate issues.

Saddleback Civil Forum on the Presidency
It is the duty of every citizen according to his best capacities to give validity to his convictions in political affairs. -A Einstein

OK, this is a long read (or watch), but it is well worth it. I’ve been trying to get to know the two presidential candidates, and this interview has provided very valuable information. This unusual forum forced the candidates to speak from the heart, outside their normal canned speeches. “It was far less about religion and a lot more about values,” said Candy Crowley, CNN’s senior political correspondent.

My personal opinion of McCain went way up after reading his responses. His answers were mostly short, concise, and meaningful. Check out the video, including highlights.

Woman in Car Accident
A woman and a man are involved in a car accident; it’s a bad one.. Both of their cars are totally demolished but amazingly neither of them is hurt.
After they crawl out of their cars, the woman says, “so you’re a man. _That’s interesting_. I’m a woman. Wow, just look at our cars! There’s nothing left, but we’re unhurt. This must be a sign from God that we should meet and be friends and live together in peace for the rest of our days”.
Flattered, the man replies, “Oh yes, I agree with you completely, this must be a sign from God!”
The woman continues, “And look at this, here’s another miracle. My car is completely demolished but this bottle of wine didn’t break. Surely God wants us to drink this wine, celebrate our good fortune and see where the evening leads.
Then she hands the bottle to the man. The man nods his head in agreement, opens it and drinks half the bottle and then hands it back to the woman.
The woman takes the bottle and immediately puts the cap back on, and hands it back to the man.
The man asks, “Aren’t you having any?”
The woman replies, “No. I think I’ll just wait for the police….
MORAL OF THE STORY:
Women are clever and evil. Don’t mess with them.

Pain Transfer
A married couple went to the hospital to have their baby delivered.
Upon their arrival, the doctor said that the hospital was testing an amazing new high-tech machine that would transfer a portion of the mother’s labor pain to the baby’s father. He asked if they were willing to try it out. Both said they were very much in favor of it.
The doctor set the pain transfer to 10 percent for starters, explaining that even 10 percent was probably more pain than the father had ever experienced before. But as the labor progressed, the husband felt fine and asked the doctor to go ahead and kick it up a notch.
The doctor then adjusted the machine to 20 percent pain transfer. The husband was still feeling fine. The doctor then checked the husband’s blood pressure and was amazed at how well he was doing.
At this point they decided to try for 50 percent. The husband continued to feel quite well.
Since the pain transfer was obviously helping the wife considerably, the husband encouraged the doctor to transfer ALL the pain to him.
The wife delivered a healthy baby with virtually no pain, and the husband had experienced none. She and her husband were ecstatic.
When they got home, the mailman was dead on the porch.

For the past several years, I’ve been pretty diligent in tracking my personal finances. I would enter (or download) every transaction I made and categorize it so that I could compare it at the end of the month. I’ve been using Microsoft Money, and I’ve been impressed with the level of automation it has in downloading and remembering the categories for each transaction.

That pile is all the stuff that has been accumulating since the first of 2008. I completely slacked off on my effort to keep on top of things.

A Blonde in the Everglades
A young blonde woman was driving through the Florida Everglades while on vacation. She wanted to take home a pair of genuine alligator shoes in the worst way, but was very reluctant to pay the high prices the local vendors were asking. After becoming very frustrated with the attitude of one of the shopkeepers, the young Blonde declared, ‘Well then, maybe I’ll just go out and catch my own alligator and get a pair of shoes for free!’
The shopkeeper said with a sly smile, ‘Well little lady, why don’t you go on and give it a try?’
The blonde headed off to the swamp, determined to catch an alligator.
Later in the day, as the shopkeeper is driving home, he spots the same young woman standing waist deep in the murky water, shotgun in hand. As he brings his car to a stop, he sees a huge 9-foot gator swimming rapidly toward her. With lightning reflexes, the Blonde takes aim, shoots the creature and hauls it up onto the slippery bank. Nearby were 7 more dead gators, all lying belly up.
