Beer Bread

My friend Jack convinced me to try making my own bread. He suggested a very simple recipe consisting of flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, butter, and a 12oz beer. You don’t have to mess with yeast, rising, kneading, pounding, or anything like that. It was torture while it was baking, made the house smell, well, you know, good. It was hard to wait for the 15 minute cool down period before I cut off a slice. I have to say it is good stuff. The crust is very thick and tasty, and the inside is heavy and dense. I agree, there is no reason to not make your own bread when it is this cheap, easy, and tasty!

What is Knowledge Worth to You?

Maybe information is the correct word instead of knowledge. I’ve been giving a good amount of thought to what I pay attention to lately. I’ve started paying money for a few inexpensive online news sources and podcasts that I frequently use. My reasoning is this: TV and Radio can be very entertaining, fun, and interesting, but the primary purpose of these media outlets is to MAKE MONEY. They sell advertisements, the sell product placements, they cross promote, they spin things to mold their message a certain way, they omit parts of the truth to help sway your opinion. Even though I like listening to some of the talk radio shows, I can’t stand the constant commercial breaks that seem to go on for more than half of the duration of the program itself.

I’m also really turned off by the liberal bias of the majority of the stuff on TV. Many of the TV networks (NBC is probably the worst) are not much more than cheerleaders for the folks in power right now.

The good news is that there is a wealth of information available on the Internet. The Internet is to the grassroots journalist what the handgun is to the common man, the great equalizer. Bill Whittle explains it very nicely here. These people can get their programs out at a very low cost, and I get better content without commercials or spin. I think this is worth hard cash, and I pay for it.

Oh, and if you think watching normal TV is ‘free’, remember what that means. Your brain is being controlled, advertising and marketing does work!

Frozen Peppers

I’m trying something new. I chopped up all the peppers I harvested from my garden, laid them out flat on a cookie sheet and put them in the freezer, then bagged them in small baggies. I hear this is a good way to store them long term, I’ll give it a try.

The Fair

Me, Bryson, and Amber met Brandon, Shaun, and Nana at the fair this morning. Our plan was to get there early to avoid the heat and the crowd. We got lucky on the crowd thing, it never did get real busy. Bryson surprised us and agreed to ride the huge Farris wheel. The only problem was that he didn’t want to get off! I tried out the new fried peaches and cream. It was good, but not near as good as the taco from Desperado’s. Here are a few pictures Amber snapped of Bryson in the petting zoo.

More Peppers

IMG_4535s I harvested more peppers tonight while the kids were playing on the swing. I have a bunch of them. I didn’t even tackle the jalapeños yet. I’ll cut all these up into small chunks, flash freeze them on cookie sheets, then transfer them to plastic zip top bags for using in dishes later. I think these peppers are the pablano type, they are tasty, not hot at all, except for the last bit near the stem, I also have a few of the mini-bell peppers, which are very sweet and crisp. I’ll plant more or those next year because they are such a good snack. I also picked all the tiny peppers (Tabasco) that were red. IMG_4538s I stuffed them into my hot sauce jar with vinegar. This hot sauce is too hot for my tastes, it leaves my mouth numb and my forehead sweating after I use it.

Investment Fair

I spent my Friday night and most of Saturday at an investment fair. Not real entertaining, but very interesting. There was a wide variety of speakers. The most useful were the educational speakers and the 3-panel Q/A session with experienced mutual fund investors. I was pleased to hear information that was opposite of the bleak news I’ve been hearing from other sources. I was also impressed with some of the non-conventional wisdom and methods that were discussed.

The owner of this car has a start up company selling hydrogen generator kits. I was pretty annoyed with them because they refused to answer my technical questions about how their control system worked. They wouldn’t even let me look under the hood.
I was amazed that an event like this only brought in about 50 participants. It makes me think that most people just aren’t interested in managing their own investments. This is unfortunate, since your best interests are rarely served when someone else is managing your money. To me, this is related to taking personal responsibility for your own situation.

Who Wants to Steal Quadzilla?

This is what I found today.

I didn’t notice it this morning or at lunch, so I figure it must have happened this afternoon in the parking garage at work. Seems harder than just breaking the glass, which makes me think they might want to steal the truck… the factory alarm is disabled by turning the lock cylinder. I’ve stopped carrying anything of value in there, except maybe a trailer hitch worth $50 brand new. My project tomorrow will be to disconnect that wiring so that the alarm will go off unless the keyless signal is used. This really gets me pissed off, talk about TREADING ON ME!!!
