The Clash of Generations – NYTimes.com

the generation that came of age in the last 50 years, my generation, will be remembered most for the incredible bounty and freedom it received from its parents and the incredible debt burden and constraints it left on its kids.

via The Clash of Generations – NYTimes.com.

— The whole article is pretty good, even if you aren’t a fan of Friedman or the NYTimes, but this is the money quote!  A few of my expectations for everyone:

  • Those who voted for BO admit your bad judgement
  • Those who supported the war in Iraq to ‘fight terrorism’ admit they were wrong (I have done this)
  • Muslims denounce the radicals using your religion to kill people and control everyone else, and work to solve the problem
  • Leave the world better than you found it, especially leave your children in a better situation than you were afforded.  Massive debt and oppressive restrictions on freedom  is the opposite of this.

Ron Paul Video

Ron Paul: “We Will Default Because The Debt Is Unsustainable” | RealClearPolitics.  Super 5 minute video from Ron Paul explains our debt situation very clearly and accurately.  I don’t think he made any political friends from this one, but I sure do respect him for telling the truth!

Liberty Dollar – down but not out

Liberty Dollar – down but not out | Constitution Preservation.

The story of Bernard von NotHaus is fascinating to me and I believe a very important one to follow.    In Michael Badnarik’s latest article, he explains some of the points of Bernard’s appeal.  Here are a few quotes, please read the full article for context.

the fact that the government accuses Bernard of one thing, while submitting evidence for something altogether different. This is essentially a legal bait and switch, which is a common tactic for members of the Bar Association.

With a “come big or stay at home” attitude that I greatly respect, GATA begins by explaining how important this decision is to everyone in the United States.

GATA has an abiding interest in a correct understanding of the provisions of the U.S. Constitution regarding coinage and counterfeiting. GATA believes that the Government’s effort to use this case to end the people’s right to develop and use whatever means of exchange that they freely choose constitutes a dangerous step on the path to tyranny.

The genesis of liberty is rooted in man’s quest to be free and enjoy his unalienable right to property. No greater property exists – outside of one’s own body – than money, for money represents the product of man’s labor in its physical form. Today the government’s control of money is the greatest threat to individual liberty. The entrenched Federal Reserve banking system, hatched by bankers and politicians back in 1913, has run unchecked for 90 years and has confiscated 96% of the wealth it was created to protect.

Tiny Watermelon

This little melon fell off the vine today.  I was surprised when I cut it up to find it was a watermelon!  It has more seeds than edible fruit.

Garden Update – July 10, 2011

Lots of activity in my garden right now, but it is mostly bugs and critters eating what little can survive the massive amounts of heat of our summers in Texas.  See the other posts I made about my squash bug problem and my gooey aphid problem.  I also posted a few new pictures of the plants growing in my aquaponics system.  I’m getting a few good cucumbers and peppers, but the tomatoes have shut down.  Most of the okra is still too small to produce.  Some of my mystery melons might be ready to harvest, but I’m not sure how I’ll know until I cut into them.

Twitter Questions for BO

from iowahawk‘s “Questions, So Many Questions

President Obama graciously offered to take questions submitted via Twitter today, courtesy the #AskObama hashtag. Being an inquisitive sort, I decided to submit a few that have been nagging me.

Below are my favorites:  (click on full article above for more)

  • An $8 billion high speed train leaves Chicago for Iowa City at 8:15am at 40mph. Why?
  • How come you haven’t made unemployment illegal? #duh

  • Have you ever had a menial job, changed your own oil, or fixed a toilet?
  • Subtract Malia’s age from the number of states. Multiply the result by the number of jobs saved or created.
  • Math wasn’t your strong suit, was it?
  • I let my Mexican drug lord license expire. Am I still eligible for the free machine gun program?
  • When you’re visiting his volcano lair, does George Soros let you feed the laser sharks?
  • The staffer who suggested this Twitter Town Hall is fired, isn’t he?
  • Are you smart enough to create a problem so big that even you could not solve it?
  • Why isn’t your cabinet unionized?
  • If Joe Biden has a massive stroke, (a) do you have a replacement in mind, and (b) how would you tell?
  • Is there any job you’d be better at than president?
  • I understand you finally quit smoking. Do they make a patch for spending addicts too?
  • Is this question racist?
  • Why do you need permission to be clear, and not need permission to bomb Libya?
  • On behalf of the entire US population: dude, WTF?
  • Let’s say instead of winning the future, we end up in a tie. Do we then go to sudden death overtime?
  • I just voted to increase my sobriety ceiling. Why won’t the bartender give me another drink?
  • I really need to start living within my means. Do you recommend I start holding up banks or convenience stores?
  • If ATMs are so bad, why do you keep treating me like one?
  • Whose spending created your job?
  • When you create jobs, why do always create them for Texas?
  • Are strawmen cheaper when you buy them by the gross?
  • How much CO2 is created by a burning straw man?
  • Who are these “those who say”?
  • This whole Twitter Town Hall thing is turning out to be another amateur disaster, isn’t it?
  • If Eric Holder gets indicted in Operation Fast & Furious, should he get a civilian trial?
  • If we eat the rich, what do we get for dessert?
  • if punishing employers results in more employment, can you also punish beer makers?
  • Psst… got any spare tix for the 2016 Chicago Olympics?
  • Since you’ve doubled the number of wars, shouldn’t you be getting another Nobel Peace Prize?

Bright Flashlights

I pieced together an inexpensive Surefire clone out of a Solarforce L2 body & tail switch (sized for 18650 battery), and a Cree XML (U2) drop in, 5 mode.  The Li-ion batteries showed up today so I did a little test.  These things are crazy bright.  The lights in the pictures below are 1) 3xD-cell Maglite , 2) 2x AA-cell Maglite w/ 1W LED and IQ switch upgrades, 3) P60 clone w/ XML LED and 18650 cell.

no comparison.  crazy bright!

BURZYNSKI, the movie

What if there were a cure for many forms of cancer and the government went to great lengths to supress this discovery?

His truth is marching on

YouTube – ‪CC’s Battle Hymn of the Republic – video by Lubbock Independent School District‬‏.

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
While God is marching on.

Mercedes W123 300 Fuel Sender

The list price of a sender unit is $340, so when my fuel level gauge stopped working, I was not very happy. I bought a portable 2 gallon tank and kept it full of fuel in the trunk of the car in case I ran out unexpectedly and I figured I would just leave it broke. That wasn’t good enough. I like gauges that work, what can I say! Luckily, the German designers of this car made taking the sender out possible without too much trouble. They positioned the box that houses the first-aid kit directly above the sender. It is a simple matter of unscrewing it and sliding it up. When I finally scraped enough gunk off of the bottom of it, I found a funny little nut to remove the inerads out of the protective tube. (looks like the tube also serves to dampen the fluid movement) I cleaned it up and installed it again, and now I have a working fuel gauge again! I think I’ll go ahead and keep that extra 2 gallons of fuel in the trunk though.
A note about what caused this:  I left the car sit for about a year without driving it.  Diesel fuel is often contaminated with microbes that grow and form nasty dark crystals on all the surfaces.  You can buy biocide treatments, but they are not sold in all stores, and are a little hard to find.  NAPA had a bottle that I used and hopefully cured my problems.  Some diesel owners refuse to fill up at smaller stations because that is where the contaminated fuels usually come from:  stations that don’t turn over their fuel supplies quickly.
