The Story of the Bronze Rat

A Tourist walked into a Chinese curio shop in San Francisco . While looking around at the exotic merchandise, he noticed a very lifelike, life-sized, bronze statue of a rat. It had no price tag, but was so incredibly striking the tourist decided he must have it. He took it to the old shop owner and asked, “How much for the bronze rat ?”

“Ahhh, you have chosen wisely! It is $12 for the rat and $100 for the story,” said the wise old Chinaman.

The tourist quickly pulled out twelve dollars. “I’ll just take the rat, you can keep the story”.

As he walked down the street carrying his bronze rat, the tourist noticed that a few real rats had crawled out of the alleys and sewers and had begun following him down the street. This was a bit disconcerting so he began walking faster.

A couple blocks later he looked behind him and saw to his horror the herd of rats behind him had grown to hundreds, and they began squealing.

Sweating now, the tourist began to trot toward San Francisco Bay .

Again, after a couple blocks, he looked around only to discover that the rats now numbered in the MILLIONS, and were squealing and coming toward him faster and faster.

Terrified, he ran to the edge of the Bay and threw the bronze rat as far as he could into the Bay.

Amazingly, the millions of rats all jumped into the Bay after the bronze rat and were all drowned.

The man walked back to the curio shop in Chinatown .

“Ahhh,” said the owner, “You come back for story ?”

“No sir,” said the man, “I came back to see if you have a bronze Democrat.”

Advice to ‘Gay Rights’ Supporters

Every time the issue of ‘gay rights’ comes up on a ballot, voters overwhelmingly assert that marriage is between one man and one woman.  (I’ll have to explain why ‘gay rights’ belongs in quotes in another post)  Interesting to note that each time this happens (30 states so far) that the talking heads and Democrats and activitist are appalled at the outcome and accuse people of being homophobic or being bigots for voting to uphold the traditional definition.  It is also interesting to note that the same people put so little value on ‘the will of the people’ and move to get their pet project implemented in more nefarious ways, against the will of the people.  (ironically, exclaiming the whole time how we need more democracy!)

By my estimate support for homosexual couples is high and is trending upward.  By and large, young people don’t care about this issue, it is more of a non-issue compared to all the other things they are worried about.  Left alone, homosexuals would continue to receive more acceptance and of course have whatever ‘rights’ heterosexuals have under the law.  But this issue is thrust before us as a divisive wedge issue.

‘Gay rights’ advocates are using the same losing tactics as the ‘social conservatives’ are using.  Something to the effect of: “my religion dictates I act like X, so I will support using the force of government to make you comply with my religion”  (you can substitute ‘value system’, or ‘morals’ for ‘religion’)  See how this plays out— see what happened to Rick Santorum.  Eventually you get to the point where your religion clashes with other people and now you are forcing them to comply with your religion.

The answer is stop using the force of government to push your religion on others.  ‘Social conservatives’ are about to learn this lesson— their time controlling the Republican party is limited.  The answer is liberty.  My suggestion is to fight for natural rights such  as the right to enter into a contract.  They are already guaranteed by the US Constitution but restricted by unjust laws we have.  Let other people do what they want: “live and let live”.  Stop trying to redefine the term marriage, stop trying to shove your values down everyone’s throat.

Why does the state claim authority to define marriage at all?  Shouldn’t the issue of marriage be between the couple, the church, and God?  Fight to get the government out of your bedroom and out of your personal life.  Follow the US Constitution!

NO ONE WILL SAVE YOU

Snippets from Ken Emanuelson’s post:

https://www.facebook.com/ktemanuelson/posts/10150944734806145

NO ONE WILL SAVE YOU.

The above five words may come across as ominous, or even despairing. They are, nonetheless, absolutely true.

Barely a week goes by that we don’t all come across messages lamenting the state of our culture, our communities, and our nation. They often begin with “Somebody ought to…” or “They really need to…” or “The Tea Party should…”

If you’re the type to engage in that sort of lament, here’s a news flash for you:

THERE IS NO “SOMEBODY.” THERE IS NO “THEY.”

Why do I obsess over the subject of liberty?  Because I think I have to.  I don’t understand why everyone else doesn’t seem to care.

We could wish in vain for valkyries who will never arrive, or we can join the heros who are already on the battlefield–but we must, in any case, never forget these five words:

NO ONE WILL SAVE YOU.

You can read those five words as a lament, or you can read them as a CHALLENGE–to join everyday heroes in a fight to save our cities, our counties, our states, our nations and our world.

We call upon all who share our love of liberty to stand up and fight for the God-given rights you claim to believe in–and to fight today, tomorrow, and every day, until the battle is won or the last breath departs from our lungs.

There may come a time for apathy or despair, but this is not that time.

Let us not look back on these days with REGRET for what we failed to do, but rather with PRIDE for all that we managed to do with our brief time on this mortal coil.

WHAT we do is up to each of us–but conscience and providence demand that we take action–and time is wasting.

There are candidates across our land who have stood up and spoken out boldly for the principles we claim to believe in. They need our help. Whatever you’re able to do, they can put your time to good use.

Act. Speak. Walk. Volunteer. Call. Write. Fight.

Man-Made Global Climate Change

I’ve been hesitant to pick sides on the Global Warming topic. Here is some interesting reading in a recent Scott Adams blog post on the subject:

http://dilbert.com/blog/entry/climate_change/?CmtOrder=Rating

I’m curious how many of you simultaneously hold the following two nearly-contradictory opinions:

1.      Climate change is real because scientists say so.

2.      Experts have never accurately predicted anything so complicated.

Even more interesting is some of the comments:

I hate the way this debate always gets framed, on both sides of the issue. Yes, it’s true that most scientists agree that the climate is changing due to increased CO2 in the atmosphere. But that question is almost irrelevant. The important questions are:
1) How much of the change is due to CO2 vs other factors?
2) How bad will this really be?
3) If there’s a possibility of this being really bad, what is the cost/benefit of different options of dealing with the problem?

The debate has focused so much on the question of whether climate change exists that on one side you have idiots claiming that it’s a myth, and on the other side you have idiots claiming that because 97% of scientists agree that it exists we must implement policy X to curb carbon emissions, with no consideration of the cost vs benefit of that course of action.

Saying most scientists believe in global warming is meaningless, since it ignores the wide range of anticipated changes that might occur. Part of the view of many “skeptics” is not that global warming does not exist, but that many of the dire scenarios are overblown or at least unknowable with current information. Coming to a realistic conclusion about the path of climate change would be more helpful than picking binary sides and sniping.

Rather than striving for a monolithic consensus on any issue, “experts” should be willing, able & indeed eager to challenge their own beliefs again and again to try to get closer (and possibly never) to the truth.

How John Stossel Became a Libertarian

On Liberals:  “The fall of the Soviet Union ought to have taught them their ideas are moronic and they should stop it”
On Journalism: “I just think there is some left brain / right brain thing and the kind of analytical minds that go into business and science don’t go into law and journalism. The people who go into that are like Bill Clinton: I feel your pain, the emoters, and they are often clueless about analyzing things.”

Lela Pittenger: Reaching the Next Generation

Here is an excellent presentation of how to connect and understand the younger generation by US Senatorial candidate Lela Pittenger. I’ve been pretty divisive in the area of generational warfare… I’m so mad that we are passing on massive debt and problems to the younger generation. Lela explains a lot of this very well, and her viewpoint is much more productive than mine! I highly recommend everyone watch this video, especially if you are over the age of 40 and want to understand the lives of younger people.

Response to “The Story of Broke”

Many statist (socialist) are smart and have a good understanding of some of the causes of our problems…  BUT, they seem to miss the fact that doing more of the same is not a solution!  Prager explained this nicely in my last post.  LearnLiberty.org has been publishing some great videos… take a look that their response to the video “The Story of Broke” (which is a really cute video produced by apparent simpleton lefties)
