Entry for May 12, 2006 – GPS APRS Project

I managed to get the TinyTrackerII soldered together earlier in the week, and tonight I started testing it. I had to wire up a TTL to RS232 converter to get it to talk with my laptop. I was able to configure the parameters, but haven’t set the audio levels with the radio interface yet. I also powered up the $17 GPS receiver, and it is spitting out NMEA serial data as it should. My GPS antenna seems to have been delivered to the wrong place, so I still don’t have it.

I built two more raised beds this evening. I will fill them with dirt removed from the drainage trench. I should have usable soil for fall planting.

Entry for April 30, 2006 – Finished the Fence

I put the finishing touches on the small barrier fence in our backyard today. Somehow, the spacing worked out nicely. Now I can dedicate the last 25 feet of the backyard to gardening!

Entry for April 29, 2006 – Paintball war

We were late getting started, and many people didn’t come out due to other plans, but the six of us had a great time. The weather was great. We played about half a dozen small games, and Jacob’s car got stuck in the mud. Mud was packed so tight in the wheel wells, bumps caused the back wheels to stop like you were slamming on the brakes.

Entry for April 23, 2006 – Spring Vegetable Garden

For the very first time, I actually planted vegetables in the soil at our house. I am only using one 4’x8′ raised bed because the soil in the other bed is still packed clay and grass. I haven’t conditioned it enough to use yet.

in bed:
3 tomotoes
3 peppers
2 cucumber

in 8 pots:
5 squash
2 okra
1 tomato

in hanging pots (topsy turpsys):
2 tomotoes

We bought most of the plants from Home Depot, but their selection was limited, and many of the plants looked weak. Lowe’s had better selection and healthier looking plants. I installed a new irrigation zone, and ran poly tubes to all the plants for water drippers.
