Entry for September 09, 2007 – Diaper-Change, Brian Style

We were eating lunch when Bryson started making his all-too-familiar grunting sounds. Amber was very insistent that it was my turn and I had no choices. I knew what that smell would do to me on a full stomach, so I grabbed a clothes pin and went to work. Except for the pain from the pinching that brought tears to my eyes, it was a much better experience than going naked-nosed.

Also…

Brandon came over again this morning to help work on our digging project. We were making great progress when it started to sprinkle, the pour. We had to stop, but I wasn’t giving in that easily. I decided to flip mother nature the finger and use the rain to my advantage, so I washed my truck. So there.

Entry for September 06, 2007 – General Update

I guess I’ll just provide a pictorial run-down of stuff that’s been going on lately.

First, Bryson has a couple of teeth coming in. Here is a fuzzy picture you might be able to make them out.

Mom and Grandma came to visit

And they (abandoned me and) went to eat breakfast.

Bryson had some interest in getting to the corner of the room, Amber kept turning him around, but he kept skooching back in the corner.

He has also recently become very interested in his own feet. He spends lots of time holding on to his toes.

Tonight, he spotted the cables coming from Amber’s computer sitting on the table, he made a snail’s pace B-line for them and started chewing on them. Next, he pulled the mouse off the table and thumped himself on the head. I waited for the loud cry of pain, but he was unfazed. He was fascinated with the mouse and played with it for a while. He was almost able to completely delete all the files off of Amber’s computer.

In less-cute news, I’ve started work on building a shed in the backyard. I hope to have enough storage space to finally get organized enough to be able to find things when I need them. If Amber is lucky, she might even get to park in the garage… which would be a Gallimore first.

Dasher appreciates my hard work.

I don’t have a story to go with this one, but thought it was worth including anyway!

Entry for August 24, 2007 – Out of the Cloth Box

We recently expanded our office space by almost 2 times. This week was the time when many of the people moved around, relocating to the new area. My old cubical was located where the kitchen is now, so I was moved to a temporary cube. I am sharing an odd-shaped room with the other EE here. We have a huge area between the two of us, which we need because we have collected so many books over the years.

I’m still getting things arranged, but it is so nice to look out a window (10th floor) instead of starting at a cloth wall 18″ from your nose!

Entry for August 23, 2007 – Bryson Frog

I fed the Bryson-unit cereal for the first time tonight. I can’t say I did very well, we were both a sticky mess after about 10 spoon-to-mouth attempts. Trying to get that goop in his mouth is like packing grease in a bearing, with the bearing still installed and moving.

Here is a short video of Bryson earlier this week. We keep thinking he is getting SO close to being able to crawl, but he just doesn’t move his hands… so who knows.

Entry for August 17, 2007 – WTF

I’m a ham radio guy. I drill holes in my roof for antennas. I love gadgets and gizmo’s and radios too. But I look and this and just have to say, “what is this guy doing?”

When I saw this otherwise nice Avalanche (if you forgive the towing mirrors), I laughed and tried to get a decent picture.

Two small generators and gas cans strapped to the top of the bed cover. Classic.

I can’t figure out what in the hell this guy is doing with all the small-wavelength directional antennas, pointed straight ahead. I could see no way to position them. The trapezoid antenna appears to be focused directly up…. I guess to communicate with the sun at high noon. Excellent!

The whole thing was made out of PCV pipe, painted black, poorly. It was bending pretty badly in the back, where there is no support offered by the roof rack.

Entry for August 16, 2007 – Engineering Humor

Engineers aren’t boring people, we just get excited over boring things.

AutoCAD Monkey

A tourist walked into a pet shop and was looking at the animals on display. While he was there, another customer walked in and said to the shopkeeper, “I’ll have an AutoCAD monkey please.” The shopkeeper nodded, went over to a cage at the side of the shop and took out a monkey. He fitted a collar and leash, handed it to the customer, saying, “That’ll be $5000.” The customer paid and walked out with his monkey.

Startled, the tourist went over to the shopkeeper and said, “That was a very expensive monkey. Most of them are only few hundred dollars. Why did that one cost so much?”

The Shopkeeper answered, “Ah, that monkey can draw in AutoCAD – very fast, clear layouts, no mistakes, well worth the money.”

The tourist looked at a monkey in another cage. “That one’s even more expensive! $10,000! What does it do?”

“Oh, that one’s a Design monkey; it can design systems, layout projects, mark-up drawings, write specifications, some even calculate. All the really useful stuff,” said the shopkeeper.

The tourist looked around for a little longer and saw a third monkey in its own cage. The price tag around its neck read $50,000. He gasped to the shopkeeper, “That one costs more than all the others put together!

What on earth does it do?”

The shopkeeper replied, “Well, I haven’t actually seen it do anything, but it says it’s an Engineer.”
