The Florida Keys

I set out to go explore the Florida Keys today. I stopped at a visitor center on the way for a few suggestions. I drove to Islamorada and decided it was time for lunch. I decided on Island Grill since it was voted “best waterfront restaurant”.

I ordered a local brew and their fish tacos, which turned out to be a twist on sushi. Great food, live music, and a view of the ocean… very nice!

Then I went down the road to a place called Holiday Isle. This was an attempt at a resort, but it seemed pretty cheesy to me.

Now that I’m typing this up and looking at my book, I realize I went to the wrong place. The suggested place was “Robbie’s Marina“, and it doesn’t look nearly as cheesy! Oh well!

I decided to head back north to the John Pennekamp State Park and get on a glass bottom boat to view the Molasses Coral Reef.

The narrator was very informative and energetic. We saw many different things I’ve never seen before. Makes me want to get back in to scuba diving!

Being out on the ship was great. I talked with a young couple from Germany and they asked me about how I deal with the heat. I proudly explained to them that I’m from Texas, and you just have to live with heat!

Great view of the ocean from the ship. The water looked clean as could be a few miles off shore.

The last stop of the day was another great meal. This time I choose The Fish House in Key Largo. Their fish was OK, but their key lime pie was great. I learned that real key lime pie is yellow, not green. (sorry, no picture, my fork acted faster than my camera)
