The picture is getting more and more clear. Brazil has laws that mandate a holiday on voting day, and there is a fine if you fail to vote. On the surface, one might think this is a good policy, as it gets people involved. If you dig deeper, you see that you are forcing higher cost of labor (very similar to higher corporate taxes), lowering production, lowering salaries, etc. Also, shouldn’t there be an intellectual incentive to vote instead of a criminal incentive. Interesting stuff!

Is there a problem taking PTO on election day? I think the video is encouraging people to make an extra effor to get involved at a critical time, election day. I saw no mention of an an election holiday in the video. By the size of some early voting lines, people may have to take vacation to vote anyway. I never really thought about it, but you’re right all federal holidays are “forcing higher cost of labor (very similar to higher corporate taxes), lowering production, lowering salaries, etc.” Which holidays should we eliminate to lower our labor cost? (call on me, my hand’s raised) Labor Day.
That is what PTO (paid time off) is for. I see a different purpose to this video. It is saying, “If I ran things, I would give you the day off so you could vote”. The spoiled people up here in Collin county don’t have very long lines to vote, but I have heard they exist somewhere. I waited in line 30 minutes. Let’s eliminate all federal holidays, make everything PTO based. You want to get a paycheck, you work for it. How about that?
There is no spoiled voting in our part of NE Plano. There was well over an hour wait at the one early voting site that I go to multiple times a week with the kiddos.
There was a line this morning at our site when I drove by. There also were more cars and heavier traffic at the elementary school this morning when I took SJ to school.
