Lesson learned. I thought it was a good idea to add hay to my tires instead of dirt. It would be easier to harvest with less mess. The problem is that it turned into an active compost pile. Before I realized what was happening, the poor plants bent over in pain. When I removed the hay, some of the pieces were too hot to hold in my hand, and most of the plants simply broke off when I touched them.
