Garden Update February 15, 2009

I transplanted my tomato and pepper plants into some larger pots.

I have new tomato seedlings popping up.

I shoveled a load of compost into my truck. (Free from the city)

Lettuce looks healthy.

All those peas that I planted have sprouted. I didn’t think they would sprout in the cold! I didn’t build an overhead support for this bed, I screwed up again.

Onions look healthy.

I planted 3 squares of carrots. Each square has a different variety.

I don’t think I’ll do the hay/newspaper/mulch layer anymore in the future. It is a pain to deal with when planting this many seeds. Each hole has to be poked, moving all the hay and mulch out of the way, then filled with vermiculite, the covered. It took me too much time. In the future, I’ll just leave the ground bare and deal with weeds as they grow.

Purple Haze carrots. I just removed all the mulch to save myself some time.

I also planted 1 square of radishes, 1 square of swiss chard, and 3 more squares of peas.

So… how much will you be sharing with your neighbors who are diligently reading about all this and getting hungrier and hungrier?

  2. Brian says:

IF anything actually produces, I’ll have plenty leftover to share! Don’t let that keep you from growing some of your own food in your backyard though.

I always have rabbits in my back yard. Maybe not having a dog has let them know they have a safe place to be. I shoo them out anytime I see them though. You don’t ever have rabbits?

  4. Brian says:

Yup, we have rabbits too, they live under our deck!

  5. Maryanne says:

Do they nibble at your wonderful plants?

    • Brian says:

I haven’t had a problem, yet. I do have some wire fence strategically placed that I think has prevented them from getting into the garden area.
